Opéra National de Paris

The Paris National Opera was born in 1669 and placed under the protection of the Ministry of French culture. It has two locations: The Palais Garnier, the historic theater, and the Opéra Bastille, which has hosted dance and baroque music productions since 1990. This season's most important news is without a doubt the arrival of a new musical director for the Paris Opéra Orchestra: Philippe Jordan, a 35 year old professional who has already built up a brilliant career in theaters and concert halls around the world. For his first season at the Paris opera, he will direct the first two parts of Wagner's "Ring", which haven't been in the Opera's program since 1957.
The 2009-2010 season offers the public a must-see program that includes the sublime "Mireille" by Gounod, "Die Tote Stadt" by Korngold and "The Lady of the Lake" by Rossini. Not to be forgotten, among other operas, are Massenet's "Werther", "The Sleepwalker" by Bellini and "Faust" by Philippe Fenelon, performed for the first time at the Théâtre du Capitole in 2007.
The ballet season is also interesting and moving, and under the direction of Brigitte Lefèvre, it will open with "Giselle", the result of meetings between Nicolas Paul and architect Paul Andreu, of the Béjart Ballet Lausanne and the Ensemble Intercontemporain.
The Paris National Opera seeks to promote a program that allows the public to enrich their knowledge of music, with new forms of musical performance as well, such as symphonies, recitals, musicals, conferences and literary evenings in collaboration with the Comédie-Française. For this reason, the program also includes a series of artistic events for the younger public, to make a wide variety of shows and activities available.
