Lovis Corinth - Between impressionism and expressionism
The Orsay Museum of Paris hosts, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Lovis Corinth's birth, a retrospective look of the life of the German artist. Corinth who for a brief period of time, around three years, lived in Paris, is today considered to be one of the predecessors of German painting, and was an apprentice of Bouguereau and Robert-Fleury at the Jullian Academy.
The exhibition displays around ninety paintings and, in addition, thirty works of art on paper including designs, illustrated books and prints which demonstrate the artist's originality. The subjects depicted in the works are manifold, which include mythology, religion, pictures, landscapes, and scenes with the theme of death.
The exhibition grasps the phases that carried the German artist into maturity, the uniqueness of his works and the evolution from traditional and modernism. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Museum der Bildenden Künste, Leipzig, the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Gallery and the RMN of Paris.
